2nd mvmt variations are no doubt anonymous arrangement of mvmt from KV 370a; sketch page with measure to 1st mvmt also includes sketches for "Entführung aus dem Serail" and canon studies, and dates from the earliest summer 1781; if Quartet is authentic, it is not connected to 1778 commission for Dejean (Seiffert-MJB 1987/88).

19 Song Cadenzas

--

var

--

Originated before Feb 12, 1778 in Mannheim; on Feb 14, 1778 Mozart asked his father for some cadenzas and aria cantabile with colortura indications for Aloysia Weber, who had just learned JC Bach Aria; 19 cadenzas in Augsburg to G391JC Bach Arias in Leopold Mozart's hand; another manuscript partially in Mozar'ts and partially in a copyist's hand in Mozarteum, with cadenzas to JC Bach Aria "Cara la dolce" and #14 from Mozart's "Lucio Silla"; still another manuscript found in Florence with 4 Cadenzas for T&S, attributed to Mozart.

Handwriting shows all cadenzas in Augsburg and Florence are Leopold Mozart's; Mozarteum manuscript contains Mozart's handwrting and Nannerl's (Plath MJB 1971/72); Mozart's handwriting portion appears to be from 1772/73 (Plath-MJB 1976/77); paper to those in Mozart and Nannerl's hand appear to date from time of "Luciio Silla".

294

294

--

Eb

--

Composed supposedly Jan or Feb 1778 in Mannheim based on letter of Feb 14, 1778.

Only first 22 measures of Mozart's hand, remaining 12 of M Stadler; autograph in Stockholm is actually a Stadler copy; probably dates from beginning 1779 (Plath-MJB 1977/78); Holl (NMA-1990) believes dates from Munich in Dec 1778 or Jan 1779 for performance in church there.

296b

A012

Same composition as KV 322/296a (Plath-MJB 1976/77).

8 Pieces in a Miserere

--

Sinfonie concertante f/Winds

Eb

--

Composed probably between Apr 5 and 20, 1778 in Paris; Mozart wrote Sinfonia concertante for Fl, Ob, Hn Bn for LeGros; never performed, and LeGros kept autograph.

Concertante for Cl, Ob, Hn, Bn, perhaps a transciption of solo parts with orchestration added by unknown person years later. (Levin-Who Wrote Mozart 4-Wind Concertante? 1988); Plath (NMA-1980) states piece has nothing to do with Mozart.

297c

299

Concerto f/Fl & Hrp

--

C

--

Composed most likely in Apr 1778 in Paris; for the Count of Guines and his daughter.

298

298

Quartet f/Fl & St

--

A

--

Composed in spring or summer 1778 in Paris; Ignaz Mosel wrote on autograph composed in Paris 1778; no doubt written before illness of mother; used the quartets of Cambini as model; trio of minuet is theme of old French Ronde, and finale is same theme as Arietta from Paisiello's opera "Gli schivai per amore" that did not appear until 1787.

Handwriting and paper clearly show later Vienna time, no doubt at the earliest late 1786; theme of 1st mvmt variations very similar to opening measures of Franz Hoffmeister song "An die Natur", in addition to other mvmt similiarities noted in KV6; Paisiello's opera first performed in Naples in 1786 and first Vienna performance Sept 1, 1786.

299a

354

12 Variations f/Kybd

Je suis Lindor

Eb

Fischer widened dating to between end of Mar and end Sept 1778 (Fischer-NMA Crit.Rep. 1962).

299b

Ballet Music

Les petits riens

C

--

NMA published Overture and all 20 pieces, saying that it was not possible to draw a clear conclusion on which parts were by Mozart and which were not (Heckmann-NMA 1963).

299c

--

Sketch of a Ballet Intermezzo

--

var

--

Composed supposedly in spring or summer 1778 in Paris; no doubt a sketch to ballet project with Noverre in Paris.

Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman

C

--

Composed supposedly in early summer 1778 in Paris; no doubt as exercise material for a student.

Handwriting and paper studies show later time of summer 1780 at the earliest and more than likely 1781/82 in Vienna (Plath-MJB 1976/77 and Tyson-NMA 1992).

300f

353

--

C

--

Composed supposedly middle Jul 1778 in Paris; Mozart's "small Preämbulum" sent to his father in letter of Jul 20, 1778, although music does not fit description in letter.

Handwriting and paper studies show earlier time of autumn 1777, and piece is probably the 4 lost Preludia of KV 284a; small Preämbulum mentioned in July 20 letter must be lost (Plath MJB 1976/77 and NMA 1982; Wolff-Festscrift Wolfgang Rehm 1989).

A008

Overture [Symphony]

--

unk

--

Composed probably end of Aug or beginning Sep 1778 in Paris; Mozart wrote of 2 Symphonies in letter of Oct 3, 1778.

Doubtful if 2nd symphony Mozart writes of in letter is a new work; instead, presented older one taken along from Salzburg (Zaslaw-Symphonies 1989 and Tyson-Musical Times 1978).

315b

A003

Music to a Melodrama by Gemmingens

Semiramis

unk

--

Begun in Nov 1777 in Mannheim; letter of Dec 3, 1778 Mozart writes he is composing 1st act of declaimed opera called "Semiramis", and will finish it in Salzburg; nothing more than that known of work.

Lütteken (Mozart und Mannheim 1994) believes instrumental interludes to "Thamos" originally intended for "Semiramis"; Kuster (Acta Mozartiana 1995) discredits this theory.

315f

A056

Concerto f/Kybd & Vn

--

D

--

Begun in Nov 1778 in Mannheim; intended for himself on Kybd and Ignaz Fränzl on Vn; abandoned when Elector took orchestra to Munich and Fränzl stayed behind.

315g

(K2) 315a

8 Minuets w/Trio f/Kybd

--

var

--

Composed supposedly beginning 1779 in Salzburg; most likely Kybd reductions of orchestral Minuets.

Handwriting shows originated end of 1773. The Trio placed with #8 has nothing to do with this set, proably originates from 1779/80.(Plath-MJB 1976/77); paper studies might also place Minuet to #8 in 1774 (Tyson-NMA 1992); orchestral version of minuets lost and unable to determine dating (Lindmayr-Brandl-MJB 1995).

316a

365

Concerto f/2 Kybd

--

Eb

10

Composed supposedly beginning 1779 in Salzburg.

Autograph (in both Wolfgang and Leopold Mozart's hand) of Cadenzas to 1st and 3rd mvmt on paper used by Mozart from the middle of 1775 to the beginning of 1775; however, watermarks on autograph in Poland point to composition between July 1779 to Jan 1781, while Plath says handwriting points to a time after "Idomeneo"; NMA (Wolff-Crit Report) dates about turn of year 1780/81; Konrad (Beiträge zur Geschichte der Konzerts 1990) believes could not be composed before April 1779 and conceivably 1780.

317

317

Paper used by Mozart from summer 1779 until beginning of 1781 (Tyson-NMA 1992).

318

318

319

319

Symphony

--

Bb

33

Dated Jul 9, 1779 in Salzburg; minuet added later, probably 1782 in Vienna; published by Artaria as Op 7/2 in 1785.

320

320

Serenade f/Orch

Posthorn Serenade

--

Dated Aug 3, 1779 in Salzburg; composed for a specific festivity; Mozart performed concertante mvmts (3 and 4) in concert in Vienna on Mar 23, 1783.

Composed as Finalmusik at University in Salzburg; Heartz (Haydn,Mozart and Viennese School 1995) proposes 2 concertante mvmts are adaptation of or actually are the lost Paris 4-Wind Concertante KV 297B; set of parts in Mozarteum found unknown Minuet in Eb and Trio in A inserted into Serenade (Angermüller-MISM 1981).

320a

335

320B

--

Divertimento f/Orch

--

D

--

Composed probably in summer 1779 in Salzburg; thought to be circa KV 320b, but handwriting points to an earlier Salzburg time.

Handwriting and paper studies show piece dates from end of 1772 or beginning 1773 in Salzburg (Plath-MJB 1976/77 and Tyson-NMA 1992).

320b

334

Divertimento f/Orch

--

D

--

Composed supposedly in summer 1779 in Salzburg; cassation mentioned in letter by Leopold Mozart as "Musique vom Robing", (Sigmund Robing).

Plath dates the March K320d, that no doubt is associated with this Divertimento, in early summer 1780 or even later; the Divertimento probably dates from this time also; Sigmund von Robing took his final exams at Salzburg University in August 1780, no doubt composed as Finalmusik (Dunning-NMA 1975),

320c

445

March

--

D

--

Composed supposedly in summer 1779 in Salzburg; no doubt connected with Divertimento KV 320b.

Handwriting places piece in early summer 1780, probably even later (Plath-MJB 1976/77).

320d

364

Sinfonia Concertante f/Vn & Vl

--

Eb

--

Composed supposedly in summer or later summer 1779 in Salzburg.

Konrad (Beiträge zur Geschichte der Konzerts 1990) believes from dimensions of composition must have been composed after Concerto f/2 Kybds KV 316a, (See KV 316a).

320e

A104

Sinfonia Concertante f/Vn, Vl & Vc

--

A

--

Begun probably in summer or autumn 1779 in Salzburg; placed immediately after Sinfonia Concertante for Vn & Vl, because Vl was also prescribed scordatura.

Konrad (Beiträge zur Geschichte der Konzerts 1990) places fragment before Concerto f/2-Kybds KV316a and Sinfonia Concertante KV 320b.

321

321

Vesperae de Dominica

--

C

--

Composed 1779 in Sazburg.

--

Composed supposedly 1779 in Salzburg; draft for KV 321.

321b

276

Regina Coeli

--

C

--

323

A015

Kyrie

--

C

--

Composed supposedly 1779 in Salzburg; last 5 measures completed by M Stadler.

Stadler added parts from measure 4, and from measures 38 to 53 are completely his; handwriting shows to have originated at earliest summer 1780 and probably much later (Plath MJB 1976/77); paper studies show it to be from Dec 1787 to Feb 1789 (Tyson-Auto Scores1987).

323a

A020

Gloria

--

C

--

Begun supposedly 1779 in Salzburg; probably in connection with KV 323.

Hadwriting shows to have originated at earliest summer 1780 and probably much later (Plath MJB 1976/77); paper studies show it to be from Dec 1787 to Feb 1789 (Tyson-Auto Scores 1987).

336a

345

Choruses and 2 Entr'Actes to a Play

Thamos, König in Ägypten

var

--

Composed 1779 in Salzburg; new versions of choruses and instrumental interludes.

Choruses possibly revised from 1774 version and performed on Jan 3,1776 in Salzburg, along with interludes, and then again in 1779-80 in Salzburg for Böhm troupe (Plath-MJB 1976/77); Kuster (Acta Mozartiana 1995) believes only choruses in first version performed in 1776 Salzburg performance; does not think interludes and revised choruses written until 1779.

336b

344

Singspiel in 2 Acts

Zaïde [Das Serail]

D

--

Composed 1779/80 in Salzburg; title not from Mozart; no doubt written with visiting Böhm troupe in mind, and eye toward Vienna performances.

From letter of Leopold Mozart's from Dec 1780 can be concluded Singspiel was written to win Emperor's approval in Vienna (Tyler-Music & Letters 1991).

336c

343

First version (2 Cl, 2 Hn, 2 Bn) composed Oct 1781 in Vienna; second version (2 Ob, 2 Cl, 2 Hn, 2 Bn) composed in Jul 1782 in Vienna; Mozart wrote on Nov 3, 1781 that he was treated to his Serenade for 6 winds that he had written for St. Theresa's Day (Oct 15), for Frau von Hickel's sister; 8-wind version probably made for Prince Liechtenstein.

Mozart's letter of July 27, 1782, in which he stated he had to compose a Nacht Musique for winds "in a great hurry", probably refers to this Serenade in its 8-wind version. Possibly for Liechtenstein's ensemble (Leeson/Zaslaw-NMA 1978).

A

Dated Oct 19, 1782 in Vienna; portions of finale separated and some lost; Kybd reduction by Cipriari of mvmt scored up for editions; questionable whether originally intended as finale for KV 414 or replacement in same concerto.

Tyson discovered autograph ending of Rondo in 1980; now all or parts of autograph to all but 4 pages exact; no doubt not intended as finale for KV 414, since finale to that concerto starts on same leaf of paper as 2nd mvmt; also KV 382 can not be played "a quattro" as Mozart advertised that concerto could be (Tyson-Auto Scores 1987).

Holschneider (Musikforschung 1964) doubted authenticity due to various poor sources; Flothuis doubted authenticity on stylistic grounds (Mozart's Arrangements 1969); Tomita suggests K404a composed later than KV 405, and new sources weaken Mozart's position as author/arranger;  possibly arranged as late as 1801 (A New Light Shed on Origin of KV 404a and 405--paper read at British Musicology Concerence 1996; Music & Letters, 2000)

Arranged supposedly 1782 in Vienna; arrangemnt for string quartet of 5 JS Bach Fugues; probably made for Sunday matinees at van Swieten's; title page of André edition of 9 famous quartets states from the same publisher 6[!] Fugues of JS Bach.

Croll (ÖMz 1966) found fragmentary autograph transcription for String Quartet of J.S.Bach Fugue BWV891 transposed to c and believed 6th Fugue. Fragment completed by M. Stadler; Plath believed 6th Fugue was Mozart's transcription of Froberger Fantasia K.Anh A 60 (Plath-Festschrift Gerhard Croll 1992).

Begun supposedly 1782 in Vienna; no doubt in time of KV 405, possibly arrangement of another composer's work.

Perhaps a study piece for canonic technique rather than a quartet mvmt (Finscher-NMA 1960); paper used by Mozart first near end of 1789 and mainly in 1790-91, perhaps associated with Prussian Quartets (Tyson-Mozart Studies 1991).

German Opera

--

unk

--

Planned in beginning Feb 1783 in Vienna; Mozart's letter of Feb 5, 1783 stated writing German opera a Goldoni's "Il servitore di due padroni".

Kunz (NMA-1971) believes 2 Aria fragments, KV 416b and 416c, are apparently in connection with planned German Opera. Agrees with Einstein that it is unlikely Mozart would have planned inserts into the German operas of others; Konrad (Schaffensweise-1992) lists melody sketch to a Bass Aria as probably belonging to music of lost German opera.

Concerto f/Ob

Composed supposedly in Feb or Mar 1783 in Vienna; per Mozart's letter of Feb 15, 1783, composed for Prince Esterhazy's Oboist.

Paper and handwriting show composition earlier; from handwriting Nov 1778 while watermarks most likely shortly before Mozart left Paris, but perhaps as he was returning to Mannheim. (Giegling-NMA 1981 and Tyson-Auto Scores 1987).

The Great Mass

c

--

Composed between summer 1782 and May 1783 in Vienna; performed at St. Peter's in Salzburg on Oct 26, 1783, with Constanze singing Soprano.

NMA (1983) believes Credo not completed because not sung in Mass on a Saint's day; Landon (Essays LaRue-1990) states Credo was sung if a Sunday; varous sketches printed in NMA to "Laudamus te", "Cum Sancto Spirtu", and "Dona nobis pacem"; most of the extra wind parts are on Salzburg paper, no doubt other parts written in Salzburg (Tyson-Mozart Studies 1991).

6 sketches and fragments probably to Mass KV 417B.

Only first part, (to "Cum Sancto"), can be brought into connection with Mass KV 417a; #2 is a 5m sketch for chorus dating from 1770; #3 is a 12m sketch to a choral fugue also dating from 1770; #4 is a 4-part sketch or chorus from 1770; #5 is an 8-part Fugato sketch dating to 1784; and #6 is a 4-part Fugue sketch dating to second half of 1783, which perhaps is a copy of a work of another composer (Konrad-Schaffensweise 1992).
