Default Re: Unheard Mozart

I have finally got the time to sit down and identify the Mozart pieces completed and/or realized on the Unheard Mozart CD. I have identified all of them. If I have one complaint on the CD, it is that they could have done a better job letting people know exactly what fragments were used, by using K.numbers or NMA volume, page number etc. Maybe I missed something in the notes.

Anyone interested, drop me a private message and I'll give the matchups.

I have the "Duo Crommelynck" set and I appreciate the fact that they did not "tamper with" or "finish" any fragments. I don't think anyone can do justice to Mozart's unfinished works. It is very funny that the music that Mozart threw out is so sought after and has some ideas greater than other "finished" music...

Why do you think that no one can do justice to Mozart's unfinished works?

Do you include Süssmayr in that blanket rejection?

And Max Stadler? Without a score and some musicological assistance, can you spot where Wolfgang stops and Max starts in the Fantasia K396?

I once worked on that, I believe. However, I can't answer that specific question right now.

That's fine Zevy, and I will not labour the point. I respect your distaste for completions. There are recordings that present the fragments "unadorned" and I think you will even find one that purports to do this for the Requiem (Mr Leeson has written about this in an earlier post).

Yes Ron, I do prefer the "unadorned" fragments. I've heard a number of them. Sometimes they even sound scary! The Requiem, on the other hand, is more problematic, as I posted earlier (below).

No. And that is why I believe that we really don't know what parts of the Requiem Mozart did not write. Personally, I can't see how anyone else could have written the Lacrimosa.

However, as I know this discussion can get ugly, I would like to clarify:

Generally, I really do not like anyone's completion of Mozart's work. And that is a generalization. Please do not take me to task for that; it is only a personal opinion.
