Default Period Instruments

I recently bought a CD of Mozart's Piano Trios in which all three instruments were from the classical period. The fortepiano in particular produced a wonderful sound.
What are other MozartForum members attitudes to performances on period instruments? Do you prefer them? I usually lean towards the authenticity of the period instruments, however some pieces seem to work better when produced on modern instruments. For instance, Bach's Goldberg Variations have always heightened my appreciation and love of the work when performed on a modern piano.

What do other people think?
